Extreme Winds, Dangerous Conditions Friday

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until tonight in Stutsman County and most of eastern and central North Dakota.

The National Weather Service says fire conditions have grown even more dangerous over the past 24 hours, with humidity continuing to linger in the teens while strong winds batter the region.   NWS officials are reminding residents that even the smallest fire could ignite flames that will quickly become uncontrollable, as has been reported this week in areas across the state.

Wind speeds will become severe by Friday afternoon, with westerly winds reaching sustained speeds in the upper-30s in the James River Valley, and gusts of over 50 mph expected.

Flights in and out of Jamestown Regional Airport may be delayed or grounded for extended periods due to the severe winds, and travelers should check with the company or airport for updates.

Dust storms have also caused travel on the roads to become dangerous in areas.  Anybody caught in a dust storm while driving should make sure their headlights are on and used reduced speed.  A reminder that caution or hazard lights are not advised unless you are stopped in an emergency situation.

The winds should calm down by sunset, with the Reg Flag Warning expiring at 9:00 p.m.  That should usher in a 24 hour period of great weekend weather, with Saturday’s winds calm with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s in Jamestown.
