McLean County Fatal Rollover Crash Adds to North Dakota’s Rising Death Count on the Roads

Jun 8, 2026 | 6:52 AM

Another fatal crash has been reported in North Dakota, continuing a higher early-year pace on the state’s roads.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a 48-year-old Mercer man was killed in a rollover crash in McLean County Sunday morning.

Troopers say the man was driving a 2016 Chevy Cruze north on Highway 41, about two miles south of Mercer, when the vehicle failed to make a curve and rolled.

The crash happened sometime during the early morning hours. A passerby found the crash scene at about 5:58 a.m. and called 911.

Troopers say the driver was not wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The McLean County crash appears to be at least the 30th fatal crash reported by the Highway Patrol in 2026, based on NDHP’s public release index.

At the same point last year, NDHP had listed about 22 fatal crash events. North Dakota finished 2025 with 85 traffic deaths, the state’s lowest annual total in nearly three decades. May was the deadliest month on North Dakota roads since last October, with nine fatal crashes reported last month.
