Many gathered Thursday to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new James River Senior Center and Public Transit facility.

Located at the former IDK Bar and Grill building on 13th St. NE, the $3 million headquarters was unveiled. The community hub was completed debt-free, as half the cost was covered by community donations.

The space improves accessibility for those with mobility constraints, and expands capacity for meals, activities, and public transit.

James River Senior Center and Public Transit Celebrates New Location with Ribbon Cutting

A community service works better when people can get to it. James River Senior Center and Public Transit recently celebrated its new location at 1009 13th St. NE with a ribbon cutting, tours, an Information Day, and community activities.

The nonprofit moved from the Legacy Center to their new location earlier this year. The roughly $3 million project included building renovations, two additions, paving the front parking lot, and updates designed to make the space safer, brighter, and easier to use.

The new location gives the center more room for meals, activities, events, and public services. It also improves parking and accessibility for seniors and visitors. James River Senior Center and Public Transit provides meals, Home Delivered Meals, the Loan Closet, Memory Cafe, catering, activities, and public transit services. The transit program serves more than seniors and is available to the public.

This move helps the organization serve more people from a space built around access, safety, and community use. Community members are encouraged to visit the new James River Senior Center and Public Transit location, learn more about its programs, and support the services it provides.
