Fargo City Commission Chooses Civic Center Site for New Convention Center

Jun 23, 2026 | 7:25 AM

The long-running effort to build a convention center in Fargo has taken another major step. The Fargo City Commission voted Monday to move forward with the Civic Center site for the city’s future convention center.

The decision came on a 4-to-1 vote, with Commissioner Denise Kolpack voting against it.

Commissioners had been choosing between two finalist proposals: one at the Fargo Civic Center and one near Brewhalla. The decision gives Fargo the go-ahead to work toward a development agreement for the Civic Center proposal.

The city says the project is expected to be a public-private partnership, with Fargo financing the convention center and the selected development team financing nearby private development.

The Fargo convention center project has been years in the making.

Fargo voters approved an additional 3% tax on hotel and motel stays in 2024 to help pay for construction of the convention center.

More work still has to be done before construction can move forward. That includes development agreements, financing documents and other details tied to the project.
