Jun 29, 2026 | 7:37 AM

Severe weather & heat is likely throughout eastern North Dakota today.

The National Weather Service has issued a Level 2 Storm Threat Advisory, warning of large hail, wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, and another possible outbreak of tornadoes.

The NWS Grand Forks office is predicting the storms to arrive later in the evening, then moving into western Minnesota and possibly strengthening while moving east.

There’s also a heat advisory for Monday for the same areas.  The NWS issued the alert after expectations the heat index will rise into the 100s, possibly close to 110 in some areas of southeastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota.

The Weather Service is reminding residents to stay hydrated and keep pets and livestock cool with water available.

Today’s weather comes on the heels of severe storms in western North Dakota throughout the weekend, with tornadoes spotted in Billings County, near Coleharbor, and near Hettinger.   The NWS is still gathering information on those formations.

While the storms are likely to pass through by tomorrow morning, the heat will stick around.   The NWS says extreme heat could affect the area through the 4th of July weekend, with air temperatures approaching 90 degrees by Thursday.   Weekend storms are possible.

Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts during this period of extreme heat and severe storms.
