North Dakota has another confirmed emerald ash borer infestation, and state ag officials are reminding people not to move firewood from affected areas during the holiday weekend.
The North Dakota Department of Agriculture says the invasive insect was found this week north of Mapleton. It is the second confirmed detection in Cass County this year.
North Dakota’s first emerald ash borer detection came in 2024 in LaMoure County.
Emerald ash borer attacks ash trees and can be spread long distances when people move firewood or tree trimmings. State officials say the insect usually only flies a mile or two on its own.
Signs of emerald ash borer include thinning tree canopies, bark splitting, tunnels under the bark and small exit holes.
Anyone heading to a lake, campground or cabin this weekend is encouraged to buy or gather firewood locally, where allowed, and burn it there.
LaMoure and Cass counties are both under emerald ash borer quarantine. Suspected infestations can be reported through the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.
