North Dakota Military Gallery Construction Paused Over Funding Gap

Construction has stopped on a major military history project at the North Dakota Capitol grounds.

The State Historical Society says work on the Military Gallery addition at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck is paused through at least July 31, or until funding is resolved.

The project is planned as a roughly 67,000-square-foot addition, with space to tell the stories of North Dakota service members, veterans, tribal military history, and the National Guard.

The total cost is estimated at about $78 million. State lawmakers approved public funding and a Bank of North Dakota line of credit, but the project also depends heavily on private fundraising.

Under legislation approved last year, the project needs nearly $12.8 million in private pledges before it can access another $15 million in state money. The North Dakota Monitor reports current pledges are around $4.1 million, with about $800,000 of that collected so far.

Legislative leaders are expected to meet with State Historical Society officials to review options to fund and resume construction.
