The USDA says 67% of topsoil was short or very short for the week ending Sunday. That was up five percentage points from the previous week. Subsoil was 57% short or very short.
Corn showed the steepest decline among the major row crops in the weekly report. Thirty-seven percent of North Dakota corn was rated good or excellent, down from 50% one week earlier.
Spring wheat rated 46% good or excellent, down six points. Barley fell 13 points to 47%, while soybeans slipped two points to 44%.
Pasture and range conditions also declined. Thirty-seven percent was rated poor or very poor, compared with 23% the previous week. Only 24% was rated good, and none was rated excellent.
Harvest reached two percent for spring wheat and nine percent for barley.
