Train Derails at Casselton
CASSELTON – Burlington Northern Sante Fe railway spokeswoman Amy McBeth says a train that derailed a mile west of Casselton around 2:10 p.m. Monday was carrying crude oil.
Emergency responders, including Haz-mat personnel and firefighters are responding to the scene.
It's unclear how many cars of the 106-car train have derailed or where the eastbound train was headed. McBeth says there were no injuries.
The Cass County Sheriff's office says it remains unclear how severe the accident is as deputies were just arriving at the scene just before 3 p.m.
Thick, black smoke could be seen from about 15 miles away according to some reports..
City Auditor Sheila Klevgard sent out an email to Casselton residents around 3 p.m., advising residents to stay in their homes. A person who answered the phone at the public library said residents spoke of hearing two explosions around the time of the derailment.
