The American Farm Bureau has sent a letter to President Donald Trump, warning that the newly imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China could severely impact U.S. farmers and ranchers.
The letter highlighted these three countries accounted for over $75 billion dollars in U.S. agricultural exports last year, representing half of all agricultural trade. Historically, tariffs have targeted U.S. agriculture, which relies heavily on global market purchases.
The Bureau urged the administration to consider the broader economic consequences, noting that over 20% of U.S. farm income is derived from exports, and disruptions could further strain the struggling sector.
The letter also emphasizes the importance of preserving and expanding international trade opportunities rather than restricting them through tariffs, which could drive up costs and lower commodity prices for American farmers.
