Jefferson Calls for Patience with New QB McCarthy

The best wide receiver in the NFL is calling for fans, and experts to relax and use patience when it comes to the development of his new signal caller.

During the first days of NFL training camp, Minnesota All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson was asked about the development of 2nd year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Jefferson was honest, and said its a process:

“You definitely have to have patience,” Jefferson said about McCarthy, per Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim. “He’s pretty much a rookie. Last year pretty much doesn’t count for him. He’s still new to the scheme, new to coming out here and throwing it to these different receivers. You’re not really expecting him to have the same mindset as a veteran. You can’t really have that expectation from him, but we do have an expectation of him being great, him coming out here every single day and working his butt off and progressing every single day. And we do see that progression just on that second day of camp.”

Jefferson brings great points that many fans and experts need to remember. McCarthy’s only game time was preseason action a year ago, where he then didn’t play again due to a knee injury. McCarthy hasn’t played meaningful snaps that aided in his development, and has yet to face a full starting caliber defense in the NFL. There will be a learning curve for McCarthy going to into 2025, and the mistakes, miscues, and possible turnovers are all apart of the process of McCarthy becoming the starter for Minnesota for years to come.
