Bob Hetler, long-time NDHSAA leader and Hall of Famer, remembered following passing

The North Dakota high school activities community is mourning the loss of a long-time leader as former NDHSAA Assistant Director Bob Hetler passed away this week.

Hetler, who dedicated 30 years of his life to the NDHSAA in Valley City, died on Monday, February 9, at the age of 82. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, February 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City.

Bob Hetler was a central figure in North Dakota high school fine arts and media relations from 1978 until his retirement in 2008 He served as the coordinator for forensics, drama, music, and all NDHSAA publications. Upon his retirement, he was honored with the prestigious NFHS Citation in 2008 for his nationwide contributions to high school activities. A 20-year treasurer for the Communication Speech and Theater Association of North Dakota (CSTAND), he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1992.

Before moving into administration, Hetler spent 13 years as a high school English teacher in Northwood. During his time in the classroom, he also coached elementary basketball and served as an assistant football coach, alongside directing the speech and drama programs.
