Since suffering an ankle injury in Week 2 against the Falcons, future of the Franchise J.J. McCarthy has not seen the field, and it will be the same as the Vikings head into a Thursday Night Football matchup on the road at the LA Chargers.
The team announced that Carson Wentz will start this coming week at the Chargers after it was said that McCarthy’s ankle is “Just not there” yet.
McCarthy noted during last weeks interviews, when it was a possibility of him playing against Philly, that the ankle was frustrating him in his attempt to return to the field.
Through 4 games played, Wentz has lead the Vikings to a 2-2 record (3-3 Overall) with wins over Cincinnati, and Cleveland, and also taking losses to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, which were ugly games by both Wentz and the Vikings’ offense. Wentz so far, has thrown for 1,072 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions in his 4 games of relief.
Wentz has struggled in those losses he has played in, not being able to finish drives with touchdowns, throwing bad interceptions, and taking sacks, but to be fair, weren’t all his fault. But the question looming in Minnesota will be, how long will it be until McCarthy is “ready” to go again?
And WHEN McCarthy is ready to go, will Kevin O’Connell turn back to his Week 1 starter? Or will they ride the arm of Wentz? When comparing the two, and McCarthy on a small sample size. Wentz gives the Vikings a better chance to win, but the Vikings also said during the offseason the McCarthy was “their” guy, so will they put McCarthy back in to take his licks and bumps and bruises in his first year as the starter?
We will find out in the coming weeks. It seems for the moment, who will be starting for the Vikings will be a weekly headline heading into each week.
