State Representative Nico Rios, a Republican whose term was marked by national headlines and calls for his resignation, announced Tuesday that he will not seek reelection, per reporting by Michael Achterling.

Rios told the North Dakota Monitor he plans to focus on his oil and gas career and personal life when his term ends this December. He will not seek his party’s endorsement at this Saturday’s District 23 convention.

First elected in 2022, Rios faced widespread condemnation in 2023 after bodycam footage showed him berating police with homophobic and racist slurs during a DUI arrest, while attempting to leverage his power. More recently, state and local GOP leaders denounced Rios for making antisemitic comments on social media regarding the Mexican President.

District Chair Corey Johnson says he plans to run for one of the district’s two House seats.
