By Seth Dunlap Jan 26, 2026 | 11:57 AM

There are six finalists for the vacancy on North Dakota’s Supreme Court.

The state’s Judicial Nominating Committee forwarded the names to Governor Kelly Armstrong to fill the upcoming vacancy.  The opening was created after the planned retirement of Justice Daniel Crothers.

The six nominees are Philip Axt of Bismarck, Mark Friese of Fargo, Michael Hurly of Rugby, and Ryan Norrell of Bismarck, Jacob Rodenbiker of Fargo, Kirsten Sjue of Williston.

Governor Armstrong can appoint a justice from that list, direct the committee to reconvene, or call a special election according to laws governing the selection process.

No timeline for the appointment was immediately announced, but the next justice would take the seat in 2026 as the court prepares for Justice Crothers’ departure later this year.

The North Dakota monitor reported on the vacancies in-depth on Monday.
