A wave of grief is turning into a call for legislative action as a new petition gains momentum following two recent pedestrian and motorist fatalities in the city.
The petition, titled “Two Lives Lost Is Too Many,” was launched on Change.org by Aaron Brown. It calls on city leaders and the Public Works Department to conduct immediate safety evaluations of local intersections. The move follows the death of Daniel Pollard, a friend of Brown’s, who passed away on January 10th from injuries sustained in an August motorcycle crash, and the tragic death of 16-year-old Jake Stiles, who was struck and killed just last week while walking near Hospital Hill.
Brown says that while Pollard and Stiles can’t be brought back, changes can be made to prevent yet another funeral. He calls on leaders to fix unsigned or poorly managed intersections, noting that the roughly $100 cost of a stop sign is incomparable to the loss of a life.
