North Dakota is officially shortening the path to a college degree for some students, as the State Board of Higher Education approved a pilot program Thursday that allows for 90-credit bachelor’s degrees, according to the North Dakota Monitor.
Traditional bachelor’s degrees require 120-credits, but this program will slash elective courses while maintaining core degree requirements. However, the board added several “guardrails” to the plan: the reduced-credit degrees are strictly limited to Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) programs and cannot be offered in fields requiring professional licenses, like nursing or education.
University System officials say these degrees are designed for students aiming to jump straight into the workforce rather than pursuing graduate school.
