A flood outlook has been issued by the National Weather Service for central and western North Dakota creeks and rivers as temperatures rise and snow melts.

While the runoff volume isn’t expected to be enough to cause flooding, some streams are at a higher risk of ice jams if ice becomes mobilized. Some streams of concern include the Knife, Cannonball, Heart, Cedar Creek, and Spring Creek.

The Yellowstone and Missouri rivers are experiencing runoff that are causing them to rise as well. Ice fishers and other outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to be cautious when out on the ice. Quick rising water creates hazardous conditions along shorelines. The NWS says conditions for melting are expected to continue into the second full week of February. Anyone who notices ice jams are encouraged to report it to local emergency management officials.
