Today is Presidents’ Day – Most Government Offices Closed

By Seth Dunlap Feb 16, 2026 | 5:51 AM

Today is Presidents’ Day, the federal holiday honoring all of the past leaders of the United States.

The holiday was first celebrated in 1879 honor of the first president, George Washington, who was born on February 22.  Some states still officially recognize Washington’s Birthday.

Presidents’ Day is an official state holiday in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Minnesota along with most of the country, and is held the third Monday of February.

Most government offices and services will be closed for the holiday and reopen on Tuesday.

There will be no garbage or recycling pickup today in Jamestown, and the Baling Facility will be closed.  Pickup may come later in the week than usual for some residents and businesses in town.
