The James River Valley is in line for another 3 to 6 inches of snow through this evening as widespread winter weather continues across western and central North Dakota.

The National Weather Service reports a band of snowfall stretches from the northwest down through south-central areas, with the northern James River Valley seeing some of the heaviest accumulations. Light, non-accumulating snow may linger over the valley overnight even as precipitation tapers off elsewhere.

Strong west to northwest winds around 30 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 55 mph are creating periods of low visibility from falling and blowing snow, especially in open country. South-central areas are experiencing near-blizzard conditions where the strongest winds overlap with heavy snowfall.

Winds will gradually diminish through the afternoon and early evening, though breezy conditions linger overnight. Across the rest of western and central North Dakota, another 3 to 8 inches is expected along Highway 2, with 1 to 4 inches north and east of the Missouri River. Near to below-normal temperatures continue through the weekend.
