James River Senior Center Opening New Building Monday

The James River Senior Center and Public Transit will open its new Jamestown location on Monday.

The move wraps up a long-planned project for the nonprofit, which has served the area since 1967.  The new headquarters will shift to the former IDK Bar and Grill building at 1009 13th Street Northeast.

The center bought the former restaurant property in June 2024 and remodeled it into a larger facility with more event space, more food prep space, better accessibility and more parking.  Executive Director Maureen Wegenke says the facility will also support expanded services and activities, while public transit continues serving Stutsman, Wells and Sheridan counties.

Wegenke says the project now totals about $3 million after additions, interior work and parking lot paving.  The Center organized a $2 million capital fundraising campaign to help fund the renovations.

Some services will be disrupted due to the move.  Wegenke says meals and activities will pause April 27 through 29 and resume April 30. Transit is expected to be closed only April 27 and reopen the next day. Clients who need meals during the shutdown will be offered frozen meals ahead of the closure.

Wegenke thanked the University of Jamestown athletes who helped with the move, and all of the staff, volunteers, and community members who made the project a reality.

A grand opening at the new facility is planned for June 18.
