The North American Bison Discovery Center in Jamestown is celebrating the arrival of its first bison calf of the 2026 season. The calf was first spotted last week, and is the first of several calves expected this spring for the North herd.

Born with a brighter, orangish coat, bison calves are nicknamed “red dogs.” Given a few more months, they’ll start to darken like the rest of the herd.

With this arrival, the Discovery Center has opened its observation deck to visitors for the season. Officials say the sex of the calf has not been confirmed; stay tuned for a gender reveal!
