Jamestown residents can help stock local food shelves Saturday during the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
People are asked to leave a bag of nonperishable food by their mailbox before regular mail delivery, and letter carriers will pick it up along their routes. That food will then be distributed through Great Plains Food Bank and locations including Progress Community Center, the Jamestown Salvation Army, and James River Senior Center.
The drive is also being organized in other North Dakota communities, including Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck. Check with your local post office if your branch is participating, as the program is opt-in and not mandatory.
The program was first launched in 1991 as a pilot program by the National Association of Letter carriers. The success that year led to the annual drive beginning in 1993, with this year marking the 34th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the largest single-day food collection program in the United States.
