Abrium Swain
12-year-old Abrium Carnal Swain of the Turtle Mountain Reservation disappeared from a child welfare center two months ago on March 15. Despite numerous pleas from family and neighbors for the boy’s safe return, Jamie Azure, Tribal Chairman for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, announced in a Facebook post Thursday that Swain has died. Swain’s family also confirmed that information, according to KFYR and Valley News Live.
The body was reportedly discovered last week north of Dunseith. Azure says that preliminary reports show that Swain died as a result of exposure to the elements, and that law enforcement suspects no foul play is involved in the death.
A candlelight vigil will be held Thursday from 7:30-8 at the Tribal Welfare Building in Belcourt. A spirit fire will also be lit at Abrium’s grandfather’s residence.
No further information is yet available, as tribal officials await reports from FBI investigators.
