A Dunseith man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Rolette County over the weekend.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says 49-year-old David St. Claire was driving a 2001 Chevy Silverado south on 28th Avenue Northeast near Dunseith when the pickup failed to make a curve, left the road and struck a tree.

The crash happened at about 1:59 a.m. Saturday when troopers said road and weather conditions were dry. St. Claire was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The death marked at least the ninth fatal crash in the state in May.   That marks a significant uptick from the 3 reported in April and made May the deadliest month on North Dakota roads since October of last year.

There were 85 traffic deaths in the state in 2025, lowest total in nearly 30 years.   The 27 traffic deaths in 2026 put this year on pace for less than 63.  That would be the lowest total since at least 1974.
