A private Christian school in Fargo is suing North Dakota over what it calls “burdensome” teacher licensing requirements.
Capstone Classical Academy and the nonprofit Institute for Justice filed a lawsuit Wednesday. They argue that state laws are unconstitutionally forcing private schools to follow the same licensing rules as public schools. Headmaster Paul Fisher finds this to be a hindrance to the school’s educational mission. They find it hard to recruit and maintain teachers.
Fisher told the North Dakota Monitor that mandating private school teachers to get the same licensing as public school teachers is like “forcing a square peg to fit into a round hole.”
The Department of Public Instruction and the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board are named as defendants in the lawsuit, and cannot comment at this time.
