Jamestown utility bills will soon include a new monthly charge for maintenance of street lights and signals in an effort to release some strain from the budget.

The Jamestown City Council voted unanimously on Monday, establishing a light and signal utility fund. Property owners will pay a tiered monthly fee based on local pole infrastructure, ranging from $4 for standard wooden poles to $6 for fiberglass. Councilman David Schloegel says these fees are cheaper than Fargo, Bismarck, and Wahpeton’s. Officials estimate this will take street light expenses out of the general fund, and say it will generate over $357,000 in annual revenue, according to the Jamestown Sun.

In addition, Monday’s meeting also included Mayor Katie Hemmer and City Councilwoman Shannon Davis taking their oaths of office, and Councilman David Steele was unanimously elected to serve as the new city council president, and David Schloegel as vice president.
