A 31-year-old physical therapist, Air National Guard member, and University of Jamestown graduate was placed in the ICU after an accident on the 4th of July, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down.

Colin Bales of Park Rapids was involved a diving accident at his family’s lake home that resulted in a catastrophic spinal cord injury, resulting in him needing to be airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, and leaving him unable to feel his body below his shoulders. He has undergone emergency surgery and is in stable condition, but his injuries are “profound.” He relies on a ventilator to breathe, according to his CaringBridge page.

The Bales family is experiencing an extreme financial and emotional burden as Colin undergoes medical treatment. They hope to transfer him to Craig Hospital in Denver, a leader in spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Colin’s Lend a Hand Up page says that “the financial impact of Colin’s injury is expected to be between $500,000 and $1 million.”

Colin and Amy Bales are taking online donations to assist in his recovery.
