The Great Plains Food Bank is reporting a surge in local hunger, according to the North Dakota Monitor.
In its latest fiscal year, over 186,000 people accepted help across North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota, which is a 16 percent increase from the previous year. Organization leaders attribute the demand to rising inflation for household necessities and significant reductions in federal assistance programs like SNAP.
Despite a million-pound drop in federal food aid, the food bank distributed over 15 million pounds of food by purchasing extra surplus through community donations.
