Mandan police have arrested a mother after an attack inside a home left two young children dead and another hospitalized.

Chief Jason Ziegler says officers responded to a South Frontier Trail residence Thursday afternoon following reports that 22-year-old Kailey Erhart had locked herself inside with her three children. Officers heard an assault happening inside the residence and forced entry, discovering three young children, ages five months, one year, and three years, with severe injuries. The five-month-old and three-year-old later died at local hospitals, according to Ziegler.

Chief Ziegler expressed pride for his officers during the KFYR press conference: “I am so proud of my department. A scene like that is something that nobody should ever have to see, and the way they came through in one of the most horrific times that they’ll probably experience in their life, I’m proud.”

Erhart was taken into custody without injury and is held at the Burleigh-Morton Detention Center pending formal charges. At this time, she is expected to be facing charges of murder, attempted murder and child abuse, according to Mandan Police.
