North Dakota has confirmed its first human case of West Nile virus this year.
Health and Human Services officials says a Cass County resident was hospitalized with the virus. They say mosquito pools have also tested positive in five counties; Cass, Grand Forks, Richland, Ward, and Williams.
Most infections cause no symptoms, but older adults and people with underlying health conditions face a greater risk of severe illness.
Officials recommend removing any standing water on your property and in your vicinity if possible. They recommend using EPA approved insect repellants, as those on your store shelves vary widely in effectiveness. Repellants with DEET can be the most effective but are not recommended if you are pregnant or have other conditions.
