A 24-year-old Michigan man acting as a pilot car driver for an oversize load was killed Tuesday morning in a rear-end collision on Highway 12.
The North Dakota State Patrol reports the crash occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. Mountain Time, which is about six miles east of Hettinger in Adams County.
The preliminary investigation reveals a 2006 Toyota Tundra, serving as a pilot vehicle for an oversize load, was traveling westbound on Highway 12. The Tundra was traveling at a stated speed of 65 to 70 miles per hour when it struck the rear of a 2007 International truck-trailer combination also traveling west at approximately 45 miles per hour.
The driver of the Toyota Tundra, a 24-year-old man from Waterford, Michigan, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The State Patrol confirmed he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the impact. The truck-trailer driver was not injured.
The investigation is ongoing, and Highway Patrol has not released the victims identity, as the family must be notified first.
