Heat, Storms, & Fire Danger Impacting North Dakota Tuesday

By Seth Dunlap May 26, 2026 | 6:28 AM

Hazardous weather will impact North Dakota and surrounding states today.

Thunderstorms are possible for most of the eastern parts of the state, with the severe storm risk increasing to the southeast.  Impacts will be isolated in the James River Valley, but the system could produce hail and hazardous conditions at times this afternoon through the overnight hours in southeast North Dakota.

Severe winds will impact the central and western parts of the state, with the National Weather Service issuing a Red Flag Warning along the Montana border.  Sustained winds of up to 30 miles per hour and gusts into the 40s are expected there, with a critical fire risk increasing throughout the day.

It will also be hot.  Temperatures will soar into the 90s throughout most of the state.   While the dry air to the west will keep air temperatures consistent, spiking humidity in Jamestown and to the east could lead to heat indexes approaching or exceeding 100 degrees.

Alerts for severe weather will be issued by your local government agencies and by the National Weather Service.  It’s recommended you monitor and follow multiple sources for extreme weather information during this spring and summer storm season.
