Local primary election season moves into its final stretch today, with early voting beginning in Stutsman County ahead of North Dakota’s June 9th primary.
The local ballot carries several contested races in Jamestown. Three candidates are running for mayor; Pat Davis Senior, Dwaine Heinrich and Katie Hemmer. Three others — Shannon Davis, Brock Mosolf and Pam Phillips — are seeking an unexpired City Council seat. Four candidates are running for three seats on the Jamestown Park Board; Mike Landscoot, Kyle McLean, Mindi Schmitz and Mike Soulis.
Six candidates are running for Jamestown School Board city seats; Heidi Heim Larson, Jason Rohr, Chris Kramlich, Jennifer P. Kross, Max Post van der Burg and Mindy Skunberg. Melissa Gleason and Steve Veldkamp are seeking the rural school board position.
Stutsman County also has other county races on the ballot, though most are uncontested.
Turning was low during the primary two years ago. Stutsman County turnout was just over 16 percent the 2024 primary, compared with nearly 60 percent in that year’s November general election.
Barnes County and Valley City voters also have several contested races this year. In Valley City, Brian Mindt and Mike Bishop are running for city commission president. Voters there will also see contested races for city commission, school board and park board. Barnes County has a four-way race for the District Four County Commission seat, along with a county auditor race between Carol Grenz and Beth Didier.
Other area communities also have local offices on the ballot, including Carrington city and park board seats in Foster County, and mayor, council and park board races appearing for Edgeley and Ellendale.
Election Day is next Tuesday, June 9th. The primary election is held on the second Tuesday in June under state law. Election results will be certified by county canvassing boards later in June.
