New USDA Crop Reporting System Starts This Week for North Dakota Farmers

Jun 2, 2026 | 5:43 AM

North Dakota farmers will be among the first in the country to use a new federal crop acreage reporting system.

Starting Wednesday, growers in the state and Maryland will be eligible to use the new tool designed by the federal Farm Service Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Farmers file acreage reports with FSA each year to document crops, land use, failed acres and prevented-planting acres. USDA says the new system is meant to make that reporting process faster and easier for producers and county FSA offices.

Red River Farm Network reported earlier that Grand Forks County was among the test sites for the new acreage certification process, with changes to how FSA-578 crop data is entered and managed.

The rollout comes as producers are finishing spring planting, and ahead of the July 15th acreage reporting deadline. Deadlines can vary by crop, county and state, and the FSA advises farmers to check with their local USDA Service Center or crop insurance agent for this years deadlines and reporting changes.

KSJB Radio and the Red River Farm Network will have more coverage of this new program throughout the week, and you can find in depth reporting on the program today from the North Dakota Monitor’s Jeff Beach, online at NorthDakotaMonitor.com.
