Zebra Mussels Confirmed In Horseshoe Lake In Richland County

Jun 24, 2026 | 7:27 AM

Zebra mussels have been confirmed in another North Dakota lake.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says invasive zebra mussels were found in Horseshoe Lake in Richland County, about five miles southwest of Hankinson.

Game and Fish says routine plankton samples first detected microscopic young mussels. Follow-up sampling then found adult mussels in the lake.

Horseshoe Lake covers about 275 acres and is near Lake Elsie, where zebra mussels have been present for several years.

Game and Fish now considers Horseshoe Lake a Class One infested water. Emergency rules take effect immediately and prohibit moving water away from the lake, including water used to transport bait. Notices will be posted at lake access sites.

Boaters and anglers should clean off plants, animals and mud, drain all water from boats and equipment, and let gear dry before using it in another water body.
