North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak is backing a new REAL ID grant bill tied to federal election policy.
Fedorchak and Florida Congresswoman Laurel Lee introduced the SAVE America Through REAL ID Act Thursday.
The bill would create a federal grant program to help states provide REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards at no cost to low-income Americans.
The proposal would also allow states to use the money for application fees, administrative costs, mobile or remote REAL ID services, supporting documents and public education.
Fedorchak says the bill is meant to strengthen election security while addressing concerns that voter ID requirements can create barriers for low-income residents.
In a statement, Fedorchak said, “Election integrity and voter participation go hand in hand, and this bill advances both.”
The legislation would authorize $50 million per year from fiscal years 2027 through 2031.
