North Dakota Tourism Drops as Canadian Border Crossings Plunge 24 Percent

Jun 15, 2026 | 7:58 AM

Analysts have been tracking a decline in Canadian tourism in North Dakota for a while now, and a new report shows this is taking a toll on the state.

The ND Monitor reports that research from the private company Tourism Economics shows that North Dakota had 25.6 million visitors in 2025, which is a 2.6% decrease from the previous year.

Reasoning behind this is largely due to a decline in international visits and a 24% drop in border crossings, as reported in the state’s annual travel update.

88% of the tourism market in North Dakota is supported by domestic travelers.

However, the report shows some positive trends for this year. Canadian border entries increased in April for the first time in 15 months. Visits to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park are up 27.3% year to date through April. Accomodation, food services, arts, entertainment and recreation are all showing growth.
