The North Dakota Game and Fish Department will begin its annual aerial pronghorn survey this weekend. Game and Fish says the survey will begin Saturday, June 28 and should be completed within two weeks.
During that time, people in parts of western North Dakota may see small airplanes flying low over the landscape. The department says the flights are part of its annual work to track pronghorn numbers.
Biologists use the survey to determine pronghorn abundance, herd demographics and fawn production. That information is then used to help set the number of pronghorn licenses available for the fall hunting season.
The survey is conducted in western North Dakota, where the state’s pronghorn population is concentrated.
