Poll workers in North Dakota are at work Tuesday welcoming voters to the ballot box. The North Dakota Monitor reports that the work does not begin today, however; poll workers receive specialty training to ensure voting moves along smoothly.

This year, the state saw high early-voting turnout as more than 101,000 ballots were cast ahead of Election Day, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Poll workers like Linda Chadduck of Jamestown, a 47-year election veteran who was recognized by Secretary of State Michael Howe as the state’s 2026 Election Hero, are the backbone of preparation that goes on all year.

Officials say that North Dakota’s voting system includes rigorous security and thorough local oversight. Ballots are initialed by election officials, and tabulation machines have no ability to be connected to the internet.North Dakota is still the only state without voter registration; all that is required from voters is a valid form of identification. This includes a driver’s license, state ID, tribal ID, or long-term care certificate.

Polls close statewide at 7:00 p.m. local time, but anyone still in line at closing will be permitted to vote. Unofficial election results will begin to appear after 8:00 p.m. Central time.
