Two North Dakota women are dead following a head-on collision caused by what appears to be a wrong-way driver on Highway 83 Sunday morning.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports that an 80-year-old Williston woman was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near mile marker 105 when she struck an oncoming Nissan Maxima. The driver of the second vehicle, a 21-year-old Bismarck woman, was not wearing a seat belt.

Both women were transported to Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, where they were later pronounced deceased. The crash occurred in heavy fog, with visibility limited to approximately 100 yards.

The northbound lanes of Highway 83 were closed for two hours following the accident, with traffic diverted between Wilton and the Highway 1804 junction. The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate why the 80-year-old driver a entered the wrong side of the divided highway.
