Valley City Electric Rates Increasing July 2

Jun 30, 2026 | 8:23 AM

Valley City electric customers will see higher rates starting Thursday.

The City of Valley City says electric rates are being adjusted July 2 because of rising costs from the city’s power providers.  Officials say the local adjustment will raise overall electric rates by 2%.

City commissioners approved the change in May. The city says about half of Valley City’s electric expenses come from purchased power through Missouri River Energy Services and the Western Area Power Administration.

WAPA rates are increasing 14% in 2026 because of operations and maintenance costs.  This comes after an identical increase from WAPA in 2025.  MRES power supply rates increased 5% in 2025 and 4.7% in 2026, with more increases projected in the years ahead.
