Governor Kelly Armstrong has issued a statewide disaster declaration for severe storms that hit parts of North Dakota in early June.
The declaration covers storm systems from June 7 through June 9 in Burke, Bottineau, Divide, McLean, Mercer, and Mountrail counties. The storms included confirmed tornadoes, repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms, straight-line winds approaching 100 miles per hour, and hail up to three inches in diameter.
The Governor’s Office says the storms caused an estimated $4.6 million in damage to electrical infrastructure. Homes, farms, and businesses were also damaged. Armstrong says the declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan to help coordinate recovery efforts.
The declaration is also a step toward requesting a major presidential disaster declaration. If approved, that could open up FEMA public assistance funding for response and recovery costs.
