Severe Storm Risk Targets North Dakota Again Thursday

Jul 2, 2026 | 7:39 AM

Severe weather is back in the forecast for parts of North Dakota today, including the Jamestown area.

The National Weather Service in Bismarck says storms have already been moving through central North Dakota this morning, but the bigger concern is this afternoon and evening.

Forecasters say scattered severe storms are likely later today. The main threats are hail up to two inches in diameter and damaging wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour. An isolated tornado is also possible, and some storms could produce heavy rain.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a broad area generally east of Bismarck and along and south of Interstate 94, including Jamestown, in an Enhanced Risk, or level three out of five.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks says the greatest risk extends from south central into parts of southeast North Dakota. Forecasters say storms may start as individual severe cells before growing into a complex that moves southeast, with damaging winds becoming the main concern.

Anyone with outdoor plans today should have more than one way to receive warnings, especially with the Fourth of July weekend approaching.
