North Dakota Canola Acres Hit Record High In USDA Report

Jul 2, 2026 | 10:14 AM

North Dakota farmers planted a record amount of canola this year.

The USDA’s latest acreage report says canola planted acres in North Dakota reached 2.35 million in 2026. That’s up 30 percent from last year’s 1.81 million acres.

North Dakota remains the nation’s leading canola-producing state. Nationally, canola acres also hit a record at just under 3 million acres.

The Northern Canola Growers Association tells Red River Farm Network the increase is tied to strong recent yields, better prices, and continued demand from renewable diesel.

The USDA also expects North Dakota farmers to harvest about 2.33 million acres of canola this year, which would also be a record if realized.

The numbers come as growers across the state continue watching disease pressure after a wet and humid stretch of weather.
