The Jamestown City Council is proposing to raise the city’s overall sales tax rate from 2.5% to 3% with revenue from the new tax additions divided evenly between the city and Jamestown Parks and Recreation. The increases would begin on Oct. 1, 2027.
Of Jamestown’s current 2.5% city sales tax, one percentage point supports TRAC and will expire when its bonds are paid. The remaining 1.5% includes three separate half-percent taxes for economic development, special assessments and public works, and infrastructure and Civic Center improvements. Those would remain in place.
The council is proposing to replace the expiring 1% TRAC tax with a new 1.5% tax divided evenly between the city and Parks and Recreation, producing a net half-percent increase and a total city rate of 3%.
The City Council discussed the proposals at yesterday’s meeting and completed the ordinance’s first reading. The plan assigns three-quarters of a percentage point to the city and three-quarters of a point to Parks and Recreation.
The combined state and city rate in Jamestown would increase from 7.5% to 8%.
The proposed tax would start Oct. 1, 2027, and continue through Sept. 30, 2057, or until any related obligations are paid.
The city and Parks and Recreation still must settle how the revenue split and future debt would be governed. The ordinance also requires a second reading and public input before final action.
