At least 16 wildfires have burned across North Dakota in recent days, with several large blazes still active Tuesday on the Turtle Mountain Reservation near the Canadian border. Three connected fires have consumed approximately 6.5 square miles in the area, primarily north of Belcourt. 10 families had to evacuate since the fires began Friday, though only one vacant mobile home was lost to the fire. Dry, windy conditions and drought across much of the state have exacerbated the fire. National Guard Black Hawk helicopters have dropped water to save homes, and fire engines have been requested from Montana and South Dakota. About 75-100 firefighters responded Sunday, with three treated for exhaustion and smoke inhalation. While most fires statewide are now contained, some individuals have been taken into custody for allegedly starting fires intentionally, though most are believed to be accidental.
