Prairie Day and Free Fishing Weekend Put North Dakota Outdoors in Focus

Jun 5, 2026 | 6:26 AM

North Dakota is heading into a weekend built around the outdoors.

Governor Kelly Armstrong has proclaimed Saturday as Prairie Day, recognizing the state’s native grasslands and the role they play in wildlife habitat, ranching and conservation.  There are events throughout the state to commemorate the day.

The largest event is set for Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park near Mandan. It runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes prairie walks, birding, kids’ activities, pollinator stations, a rainfall demonstration and displays on prairie-friendly ranching.

There are also National Trails Day events in the state’s grasslands. Volunteers will work on trail projects in the Little Missouri National Grassland, while a North Country Trail hike is planned in the Sheyenne National Grassland near Sheldon.

The weekend also lines up with North Dakota’s free fishing weekend. Game and Fish says residents 16 and older can fish without a license Saturday and Sunday. Residents 15 and younger do not need a fishing license at any time of year. Fishing regulations still apply.

More information on Prairie Day and free fishing weekend is available through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
